- About Us
Thanks for your interest in Sunshine Gardens!
We are George and Hope Lumis of Punta Gorda, Florida.
We've been married and in business together since 1975!
Our business in Byers, Chester County, Pennsylvania was opened in 1920, and served the Upper Uwchlan township community of farmers with feed and fertilizer and even the US MAIL, for over 50 years. George and his Mother, Margaret D Lumis ran M D LUMIS & SON after the death of Oscar M Lumis, Georges Father in 1935.
In the 1970's, the area began to change: the many small family farms were being sold off to developers who built homes on 1 acre lots, and the customers increased in numbers...they were looking for advice on how to build a beautiful lawn, hardware items and feed for their pets which often included horses!
In February of 1974 an arsonist torched the tall wooden structure that was the local feed mill and Post Office (Uwchland, PA) and George, recently widowed, was summoned to watch his business burn to the ground. He and his Mother had stocked up for the approaching spring season with Seed, Fertilizer and Chemicals for the farmers...he watched $250,000 burn up, he has often said.
He was faced with whether or not to rebuild and Hope was one of the many customers who cheered him on as he made the decision! For many months, M D Lumis and Son was operated out of a trailer and used an outbuilding on the property for storage.
The decision was made to become a member of American Hardware, and put in a basic hardware store in addition to the Feed, Fertilizer, Farm and Garden that had been the OLD M D LUMIS and SON! (American Hardware later became ServiStar, then became True-Value.)
Setting up that hardware store was a tedious task, and Hope was glad to help her friend George get it done!
The customers came, more and more, and in the early 80's we had grown and improved in many ways. We sold a full line of hardware, horse supplies, paint, tools and garden items. Since our hobby was growing orchids, we added many horticultural supplies to our inventory, as well.
We grew and grew to a staff of 16 people, and enjoyed every minute helping our customers get what they needed! And there was even a little wedding in 1975!
In 1985 we sold the business and in 1989 moved to Florida to get away from the ice and snow! We weren't getting any younger, and the option to grow our orchids "outside" and have landscaping that included some of our favorites in this sub-tropical climate was very appealing. Imagine, gardenias in the back yard!
After being "retired" for a few years, we opened a garden store here in Punta Gorda, much needed and well received, including mail-order and a pretty little nursery. We had wonderful help, and again, it literally grew and grew! After 7 years, we decided it was just "too much" and we closed our beautiful little Sunshine Growers in 2001...it was a very tough decision.
Since we had some 'left-over" inventory and a good relationship with several suppliers, we discovered eBay and an eBay Store. We enjoy doing it, and working hard to win the approval of our many friends and customers.
Through 15 years, making a living on eBay has become harder with increases in fees and costs. So in 2016 we decided to concentrate on a "website" with as many as possible listings and the same old-fashioned service we have always had! We hope you'll "bookmark" our site! (www.sunshinegardensfl.com) and come back often!
Home, Farm and Garden and Horticultural Supplies is what we do...we enjoy it and love working with people. We take our business very seriously and devote most of our time to it.
We have two sweet little long-haired dachshunds and a Lutino (yellow) Indian Ringneck parakeet, Sunshine. We became Florida Master Gardeners in 1993-1994, and spent 10 years or more volunteering...but no longer have the time to devote to that.
We have 3 children, 7 grandchildren and even a great-grandson! We still love our orchids and meet with friends every week to share plants and talk about them.
UPDATE: JUNE, 2012. Sadly, George went to heaven on April 17th. He fought the pneumonia and Congestive Heart Failure that caused him so many problems in his last 4 months with all he could, but finally it was just too much for him. He was 96, and until the last few days was helping pack up orders and still gave his orders when he thought things could be done better! We had a wonderful, close 37 year marriage, and did everything together. How we miss him..but we promised to keep things going and that's what we will do....we feel him with us as we work to please our customers.
Also, in December, we added another GREAT grandchild! Julia is Simon's new little sister, born a bit early, but just perfect..beautiful and healthy.
We added IAN, our third long-haired dachshund in January...he is a real charmer and lots of fun with his older brother and sister!
My family brings me joy and keeps me busy...so important at this time....I just don't have time to sit around and feel sorry for myself!
UPDATE: July, 2015: Over three years since I lost my partner and best friend....I miss him terribly, but this business keeps me busy and the doctor says "keep doing what you're doing!" Good thing I LOVE doing it! Have 5 sweet little doxies now, and they are great company and fun. The great-grandchildren number is up to 5 too! Occasional visits from my family are welcomed, their lives are pretty busy, too! Sunshine is now 25 years old and going strong!
I'm here and ready to help you with your gardening needs....just give me a call at (941)575-0335! The nasty rumor that I am "retired" is just that! "A NASTY RUMOR!" I have no intention of retiring from my business! I love every facet of Sunshine Gardens, and plan to keep going and GROWING! Always glad to hear from my customers all over the world! Hope
